Definition and Usage

The width property sets the width of an element.

Note: The width property does not include padding, borders, or margins!

Default value: auto
Inherited: no
Version: CSS1
JavaScript syntax: object.style.width="50px"


Browser Support

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Google Chrome Safari

The width property is supported in all major browsers.

Note: No versions of Internet Explorer (including IE8) support the property value "inherit".


Property Values

Value Description
auto The browser calculates the width. This is default
length Defines the width in px, cm, etc. 
% Defines the width in percent of the containing block
inherit Specifies that the value of the width property should be inherited from the parent element
